The Income Tax Return filing season brings important compliance obligations for taxpayers across India. For Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26), understanding which ITR form to file is the first critical step. ITR-2 is one of the most commonly used forms for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families with specific income sources.

What is ITR-2

ITR-2 is an income tax return form designed for individuals and HUFs who do not have income from business or profession. This form is more detailed than the basic ITR-1 (Sahaj) and accommodates various income sources including capital gains, multiple house properties, and foreign income.

The form requires comprehensive disclosure of income details, making it suitable for taxpayers with relatively complex financial situations, though not involving business activities.

Who Should File ITR-2

You must file ITR-2 if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Individuals or HUFs with income from capital gains (short-term or long-term) from sale of shares, property, mutual funds, or other assets
  • Those owning more than one house property or having brought forward losses from house property
  • Individuals having total income exceeding Rs 50 lakh, regardless of income sources
  • Individuals or HUFs with foreign income or foreign assets
  • Those holding directorship in any company
  • Individuals with income from lottery, racehorses, or legal gambling
  • Resident but not ordinarily resident (RNOR) or non-resident Indians
  • Those claiming relief under sections 90 and 91 (relief from double taxation)

You cannot use ITR-2 if you have income from business or profession. In such cases, ITR-3 or ITR-4 would be applicable depending on your specific situation.

Last Date for Filing ITR-2 for AY 2026-27

For Assessment Year 2026-27, which covers income earned during Financial Year 2025-26 (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026), the due dates are:

  • For individuals not requiring audit: July 31, 2026
  • For individuals requiring tax audit: October 31, 2026

Filing after these deadlines is possible through belated returns until December 31, 2026, but attracts penalties and interest. The delayed filing may also result in losing the ability to carry forward certain losses.

How to File ITR-2 Online

Filing ITR-2 electronically through the Income Tax e-filing portal is mandatory for most taxpayers. Here's the step-by-step process:

Log in to the e-filing portal at the official Income Tax Department website using your PAN as the user ID. If you're a first-time user, you'll need to register first.

Navigate to the e-file section and select 'Income Tax Return' from the menu. Choose Assessment Year 2026-27 and ITR-2 as your form type.

Select the filing mode. You can either use the online utility (recommended for most users) or download the offline utility, fill it, and upload the JSON file.

Filling the Form Details

The online utility guides you through various sections:

Start with personal information including PAN, Aadhaar, address, and contact details. Ensure all information matches your official documents.

Enter details of all income sources under their respective heads - salary, house property, capital gains, and other sources. Be thorough and accurate as the system performs various validations.

Report capital gains separately for short-term and long-term, with complete details of the asset sold, date of purchase, sale consideration, cost of acquisition, and exemptions claimed.

Claim all eligible deductions under Chapter VI-A including sections 80C, 80D, 80G and others. You'll need supporting documentation for these claims.

Disclose foreign assets and income if applicable, including details of foreign bank accounts, financial interests, and signing authority.

Tax Computation and Payment

The system automatically calculates your tax liability based on the income and deductions entered. If you have tax payable after adjusting TDS and advance tax, you can pay online through the portal using net banking, debit card, or other payment modes.

After reviewing all entries carefully, validate the form. The system will highlight any errors or inconsistencies that need correction.

Once validated, submit the form electronically. You'll receive an acknowledgment with a unique acknowledgment number.

Verification

Filing is incomplete without verification. You can verify your ITR through:

  • Aadhaar OTP (instant verification)
  • Net banking through selected banks
  • Sending a signed physical copy of ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Center in Bengaluru within 120 days

Verification through Aadhaar OTP is the fastest method and completes the filing process immediately.
